The Chrome-Ollies bring it home to Davis! Following their First Place Overall finish at the 2005 Mid-Pacific ASCE Regional Conference held at Cal State Sacramento, the Ags blew doors on everybody at Nationals. The 2005 National Student Steel Bridge Competition was held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. UC Davis showed both, the strongest efficiency, and put together their truss design more economically than any other truss in Orlando. Special thanks go to the Hornets of Sac State for putting up Mid-Pac last spring, and to the ASCE Chapter at UCF with advisor Professor Manoj Chopra for a flawlessly run NSSBC.
Another great year in the books for Davis, a lot of hard work completely paying off, and now they look to continue the effort at the 2006 Mid-Pacific ASCE Conference to be held on the Cal Berkeley campus next April. Good luck to everybody in the 2005-2006 season, we hope you earn a trip to Salt Lake City where the 2006 NSSBC will be hosted by the University of Utah!
2005 NSSBC - UC Davis Results:
1st Place OVERALL & STRUCTURAL EFFICIENCY
2nd Place STIFFNESS, & CONSTRUCTION ECONOMY
3rd Place CONSTRUCTION SPEED
4th Place LIGHTNESS
36th Place AESTHETICS (sweet jumps!)Finishing in Second Place OVERALL with a very solid performance was the University of Florida, and in Third Place OVERALL was Louisiana State University. We'd also like to recognize Long Beach State for their 1st Place finishes in CONSTRUCTION TIME and CONSTRUCTION ECONOMY, CHICO STATE for a very sweet bridge and construction run that finished at 8th Place OVERALL even with some big weight penalties, UC San Diego for their 1st Place finish in AESTHETICS and 10th Place OVERALL, and USC for their 28th Place finish OVERALL and having a really cool mascot.

What the Steel Bridge Team is all about
Cosponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Society of Civil Engineers, UC Davis competes in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition every spring! Competitions are held regionally and then nationally to all those who qualify. The Ags compete in the Mid-Pacific ASCE Regional Conference, along with Sac State, Cal Berkeley, Chico State, Santa Clara, Nevada-Reno, San Francisco State, San Jose State, Fresno State, and all the way from Japan, the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The goal is to challenge students to build a scaled-down steel bridge to specifications that optimizes a combination of construction and structural efficiency. Students who choose to take on the challenge will gain practical skills in structural design, drafting, general fabrication, construction planning and safety, communication and teamwork. All majors and classes are welcome to join the team, ESPECIALLY FRESHMEN. No experience necessary. All that's needed is creativity, an open mind, a good work ethic and the willingness to represent UC Davis with respect. Go Ags!
The Scoring Criteria:
Aesthetics -- Symmetry, structural details, finish, elegance.
Weight -- Poundage of the bridge itself. Lighter is better.
Stiffness -- Deflection of bridge under standard load. Stiffer is better.
Construction Speed -- Quicker, and a small number of builders is better.
Construction Economy -- Combination of construction speed, and # of builders.
Structural Efficiency-- Combination of stiffness, weight.
Overall -- Construction Economy + Structural Efficiency
