Graduate Degree Programs

The department offers Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Engineering, Masters of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in following areas of study:

Master of Science Plan I requires a minimum of 36 quarter units, including course work, seminar and research.  At least 27 units must be upper division and graduate coursework and at least 15 units must be graduate engineering coursework.  One unit of seminar course (ECI 290) is also required. In addition, MS-I candidates must complete a thesis. 

Master of Science Plan II (MS-II) requires 36 total units, of which at least 33 units must be upper division and graduate coursework and at least 18 units must be graduate engineering coursework. One unit of seminar course (ECI 290) is also required. In addition, MS-II candidates must pass a comprehensive oral examination and complete a technical paper. 

The Master of Engineering (ME) degree requires 36 total units, of which at least 30 units must be upper division and graduate coursework and at least 12 units must be graduate engineering coursework. One unit of seminar course (ECI 290) is also required. In addition, ME candidates must pass a comprehensive oral examination and complete a project. 

Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Engineering degrees each require a minimum of 54 quarter units of course work (including courses taken as part of a Masters degree). Coursework is organized into one major and either one or two minor fields of study. Additional requirements are described in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Manual.
