After competing in the 2004 National Steel Bridge Competition and placing
5th in the nation, the Student Steel Bridge Team at UC Davis took the
2005 Mid-Pacific Regional Competition by storm. The Aggies built their
bridge in less than ten minutes, allowing them to take first in speed
and construction economy. They also performed the best in structural
efficiency and stiffness, beating the competition by a large margin.
In all there were seven teams competing, and the Aggies took home five
of seven first place awards from the competition. They are excited to
be heading to the University of Central Florida, in Orlando, where the
National Student Steel Bridge Competition will be held over Memorial
Day Weekend.
What the Steel Bridge Team is all about
Cosponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the
American Society of Civil Engineers, UC Davis competes in the National
Student Steel Bridge Competition every year! The goal is to challenge
students to build a scaled-down steel bridge to specifications that
optimizes a variety of different scoring categories. Students bold enough
to take on this awesome challenge gain practical skills in design, fabrication,
communication and teamwork. All majors and classes are welcome to join.
No experience necessary. All that's needed is your creativity, hard
work and the willingness to represent UC Davis with all the respect
we deserve!
The Scoring Criteria:
- Aesthetics -- Overall beauty of the bridge.
- Weight -- Lighter is better.
- Stiffness -- Stiffer is better.
- Construction Speed -- Quicker, and a small number of builders is better.
- Construction Economy -- Combination of construction. speed, and #
builders.
- Structural Efficiency -- Combination of stiffness, weight.
- Overall -- Construction economy + structural efficiency (lowest wins)
