Graduate student Michael Gomez, his advisor Prof. Jason DeJong, and collaborators at Geosyntec Consultants have been awarded the Telford Premium Prize for their publication entitled “Field-Scale Bio-Cementation Tests to Improve Sands” published in 2015 in the ICE Ground Improvement Journal. This ‘paper of the year’ award will be given to the authors at a presentation ceremony at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London, UK, in early October 2016. The paper describes one of the first successful field applications of the bio-cementation technology, which solidifies sands through biologically mediated calcite precipitation, a process that their research group has been developing over the last decade. In this pilot application, bio-cementation was used to stabilize the surface of loose mine sands in order to improve erosion resistance, slope stability, allow vehicle movement, and enable revegetation.
