Water Resources and Environmental Systems Analysis Group

Students in the Water Resources and Environmental Systems Analysis Group are concerned with applying analytical tools from the fields of economics, operations research, and mathematical modelling to the evaluation and development of solutions to water resource and environmental problems. The multidisciplinary nature of this subject combines specialized techniques of systems analysis with a conventional graduate coursework in water resources and environmental engineering, consistent with the student's professional interests. Ideas from law, public policy, and other social sciences also are often employed in conjunction with engineering principles to develop a better understanding of the role of engineering in the solution of water and environmental problems.

Much of the research undertaken by students in this group is performed in cooperation with or funded by the California Resources Agency, US Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC), California Department of Transportation, California Department of Water Resources, University of California Water Resources Center, California Energy Commission, California Air Resources Board, the University of California Toxics Substances Research and Teaching Program, the National Science Foundation, and the US Environmental Protection Agency. In addition to research funding, these agencies provide challenging problems of practical relevance and practical expertise in the problem areas.
