Professor Schoellhamer's area of interest is estuarine physics, sediment transport, and related topics. Dr. Schoellhamer is a Research Hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Sacramento, California. As an adjunct professor, the bulk of his research is conducted at the USGS, he serves on graduate student committees, collaborates with Department faculty, and occasionally teaches classes.

At the USGS, Dr. Schoellhamer leads a project studying sediment transport in San Francisco Bay. The project collects continuous time series of suspended-sediment concentration and related data in the Bay and analyzes these data to determine the factors affecting sediment transport. Suspended sediment is an important component of San Francisco Bay because it transports adsorbed toxic substances, provides habitat for benthic organisms, limits light availability and photosynthesis, can contribute to wetland restoration, and deposits in ports and waterways which require dredging. The results of these studies improve management of San Francisco Bay and understanding of estuarine physics.
