ECI 289 Special Topics Courses

ECI 289 courses are special topics courses that allow faculty to offer instruction in emerging or specialized areas of civil and environmental engineering. Because these courses are often offered on a trial basis, topics and availability may change from year to year, and some courses may eventually become permanent offerings.

The list of ECI 289 courses is continuously updated and may not include every offering. If you have questions about a course's content or when it will next be offered, please contact the course instructor.

If you plan to enroll in two sections of ECI 289 with the same course letter (for example, two sections of ECI 289A) during the same term, you'll need a Permission to Add (PTA) number for the second section. Please contact the CEE Graduate Program Coordinator to request a PTA.

Fall 2026

  • ECI 289B: Hydro-Economic Modeling

    • CRN: 47885
    • Instructor: Alvar Escriva-Bou
    • Course Description: This course introduces the theory and applications of hydro-economic modeling for water resources management. Students will learn the fundamentals of water economic models—agricultural production models and welfare analysis—with an emphasis on linking hydrological and economic processes through water systems analysis. The course covers simulation and optimization modeling frameworks used to evaluate water allocation, infrastructure, and sustainability challenges. Through real-world applications and case studies, students will explore how hydro-economic models support decision-making under scarcity, uncertainty, and competing demands. Pre-requisites: Basic water system analysis and optimization methods.
