Steps to Graduate and Finishing your Degree!

Please see below for the important administrative steps needed to finish your degree and officially graduate. You should start reviewing these processes about a quarter and a half before you will finish.

  • MS Plan II: Steps to Graduate
  • To be completed around the start of your final quarter
    1. MS Program of Study (final version): Fill out your final Program of Study, and have it signed by your Major Professor or Area Advisor.
    2. Advance to Candidacy: Fill out the form and be sure to sign it.  Lauren will fill out the program code a degree sequence, as well as obtain the signatures in the "Graduate Program" section.  Be sure to fill out all the courses on the second page to match your approved Program of Study.  Background courses for students without an Engineering degree will NOT go on this form. Pay the fee, and forward Lauren the receipt of payment when you submit the Candidacy.

To be completed when you pass the exam/individual project/capstone course:
    3. CEE MS and PhD Graduation Checklist: Complete items on list and obtain necessary signatures
    4. MS Report Form, Plan II: Complete the form, and have your Major Professor or the Instructor of the capstone course sign as the Committee Chair.  The date on the form should be on or before the degree list deadline.  Lauren will obtain the signature for the "Graduate Advisor Section". NOTE: if you pass the exam before you are done with your classes, please HOLD this form until your final quarter, after you have advanced to candidacy.
    5. Graduate Program Exit Information: Complete to the best of your ability. Lauren will sign as the "Graduate program coordinator".  Note: Lauren will not sign off on this form until the CEE MS and PhD Graduation Checklist is complete.

    7. Diploma Mailing Address Change Form (optional): Complete the online form with the Registrar's office to have your diploma mailed to you.
    8. Order Official Transcript(s) (optional): Official transcripts are a good thing to keep on file.  There is an option to have the transcript sent after your degree posts, so order them now so you don't forget later.

  • Filing Fee Instructions
  • The Filing Fee is currently transitioning to a new policy - please see the Graduate Studies website for the most up to date information.

  • Commencement

  • The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering does not host a commencement celebration.  Graduate Students can participate in the Graduate Studies Commencement.  The commencement ceremony is optional and does not mean you have officially graduated. The Graduate Studies Commencement is only in June (there is no winter ceremony).

Generally speaking, students should start reviewing information about commencement in late February.

To be eligible for the Graduate Studies Commencement, please pay attention to the dates on the website regarding Advancing to Candidacy and/or being filed to graduate.  Students may participate in the Commencement Ceremony prior to actually graduating if they Advance to Candidacy by the appropriate deadline (see "steps to graduate" above for more about Advancing to Candidacy).

Please also be sure to pay attention to the registration deadline, which is generally early May, and the deadline to to rent your cap/gown without a late fee.
